Rugby League: Mayfield 30 - 14 Wigan St Pat's

Date published: 21 May 2018

Mayfield took another small step in their improvement with a comfortable win on Saturday.

After going behind in the first ten minutes the crowd held their collective breath as Mayfield failed to convert field position and possession into points until Wayne English touched down after good work by Brandon Wood. Zac Baker added the extras to level the scores.

The pace of the game picked up and at times the rugby on show was brilliant with English pushing up from the back and getting involved in a lot of the action.

Mistakes crept in and Mayfield put themselves under a lot of unnecessary pressure, and only some stoic defending prevented St Pat's from regaining the lead, with Nick Hargreaves Brandon Wood Liam Whalley and Luke Fowden standing strong.

Whalley was unlucky not to score after backing up a break from English but he lost the ball in the tackle.

With half time approaching English had a try disallowed after intervention from the touch judge.

St Pat's pushed up field and were awarded a penalty, which they opted to convert to give them a two point lead at half time.

Mayfield dominated the game in the second half and it didn’t take long before they claimed the lead; Callum Ogden bringing Aidan Gleeson back on the inside for a try. Baker added the two.

Mayfield had two more tries disallowed, from Lewis Butterworth and Josh Watson but refused to let this affect them and battled on.

Brearley pushed his side further in front with a neat step taking him through the defence. Baker converted.

Luke Fowden scored next before Brearley got his second. Baker was successful with both conversion attempts.

Legs were tiring and mistakes crept back in.

St Pat's pushed on and scored a converted try to make the final score 30 - 14.

Man-of-the-match was awarded to Lewis Butterworth.
