Cricket: Pawson and Townsend strike hard as Heywood continue to enjoy cup

Date published: 21 June 2018

A commanding home performance against Egerton saw Heywood Cricket Club maintain their good record in knockout competitions this season.

They overpowered the Bolton area side by 10 wickets in the second round of the Derek Kay First XI Cup to follow up reaching the area final of the Royal London National Club Championship away to Bradshaw on Sunday (June 24).

That makes the only setbacks in non-league matches two defeats in their Marston’s T20 Group, in which their latest assignment is a trip to take on Shaw Spartans on Thursday (June 21).

Egerton were never really at the races after an impressive opening salvo by Danny Pawson, who sent Marcus Pratt, skipper Will Halton and Neil Whitlow packing to leave the visitors on 12-3.

The pressure did not ease when he was replaced at the Lake end by skipper Travis Townsend, who also helped himself to the wickets of Danny Partington, Amal Dalugoda and Dave Hamnett.

With Tom McQuinn chipping in with the scalp of overseas amateur Pandu Maduwantha, Egerton were left in dire straits on 34-7, exacerbated by a leg injury to Paul Stafford which saw him collapse and limp off after just one ball.

All the while, the experienced Syd De Silva was trying to shore up the side and he eventually found an ally in the shape of Phil Dickinson.

They put on 29 for the eighth wicket until Riley Paterson was introduced in the attack, and his off-spin accounted for both then finally Ramiz Patel – leaving Stafford, who returned for the last rites, unbeaten on six. Only De Silva, with a brave 29, and Dickinson (12) managed double figures.

A total of 75 did not look too challenging for Heywood, and so it proved.

Paterson and Andy Kerr were rarely troubled and knocked off the runs in just short of 22 overs, Paterson finishing on 34 and Kerr on 40, as Heywood underlined that they are a match for anyone at Crimble.
