Sailing: Brennan and Long start the summer series with a win at Hollingworth Lake Sailing Club

Date published: 05 July 2018

The summer series racing at Hollingworth Lake began on Sunday with Martin Brennan back at the helm of a GP14, crewed by Richard Long, and the pair won the first two races in the generally strong easterly wind.

However, the direction was not as steady as might be expected and offered chances to tack at the wrong moment. The race was shortened for the younger sailors in Toppers and Daisy Fisher did creditably to finish second.

The second race was otherwise the scene of a contest between two Merlin Rockets.

Julian and Evan Parry were way ahead but had to correct a mark rounding error, while Nick Brook (Solo) took advantage for second place, ahead of David and Oliver Winder in a Merlin.

The father and son sailing Merlin’s were well ahead in the third race which the Winders won ahead of the Parry’s.

The club welcomed sailors aged over 50 years to the Regional Senior Travellers Series on Tuesday.

While some arrived and took fright at the strong easterly wind, 15 boats raced hard in the challenging conditions.
