Town lose to league leaders

Date published: 07 September 2009

Rochdale Town are still without a league win this season following a heavy defeat to league leaders Irlam on Saturday.

It wasn't long before Irlam's slick football brought them the lead. On fifteen minutes Palmer ran at the heart of the Town defence before playing in Tymon for a simple finish.

Town's defence performed stongly, with Mark Canning making a fine save to deny Davies, while a last ditch tackle from Lester Peters prevented a certain goal for Neil.

The visitors survived the onslaught and gave the Irlam back line something to think about with a succession of corners. Lambert in the Irlam goal prevented James Greenhalgh, Kerim Alan and Danny Taylor from bringing Town level before the break.

Town continued to press in the second half but could not find a breakthrough and were hit with a sucker punch when Lyon's shot from thirty yards sailed over Canning into the net.

The second goal was harsh on Town and heads dropped when Swift converted a third at the back post.

Town pushed on for a deserved goal and got their just rewards when a fine move ended in a calm Greenhalgh finish. Buoyed by their goal, Rochdale pushed for more but with six minutes to play Green scored for Irlam to give the final score a somewhat flattered outlook.

Town face Barnoldswick Town at home next Saturday (12 September, kick off 3pm).
