Mayfield 60 – 20 Millom

Date published: 03 March 2014

Mayfield went out on Saturday determined to set off strongly, Millom had other ideas.

With only five minutes gone Millom capitalised on a disorganised defence to open the scoring.

This was the only blot on the Mayfield copybook in the first half, as they run in five unanswered tries before the break.

Luke Sampson opened Mayfield's account after Ben Butterworth and Rob Kershaw had been unlucky. From then on it was one way traffic as Sam Butterworth and Paul Brearley ran the show, directing the forwards around the pitch.

Ben Butterworth was having a good game and his efforts paid off with his team mates benefiting from the metres he gained.

When Aidan Gleeson and Si Moore entered the fray, the game had already leaned Mayfield's way and they made sure of this as they had an immediate impact, with Gleeson busting tackles every time he took the ball in and Moore wasn’t far behind him taking the ball up at every opportunity.

Further first half tries came from Lewis Sheridan, Callum Marriott, Gleeson and Brearley. As well as three Sheridan conversions.

Half time: Mayfield 26 – 4 Millom

Mayfield came out strongly in the second half and it only took three minutes for Rob Kershaw to cross in the corner for a somewhat scrappy try.

Millom responded as Mayfield failed twice to deal with a loose ball and the impressive Millom loose forward pounced for a converted try.

Jack Sampson and Ben Butterworth both added to the Mayfield tally with tries.

The Cumbrians showed a great attitude, despite being outplayed they never gave up pushing forward at every chance. They were rewarded as an uncharacteristic Mayfield missed tackle let them in.

Coach Matt Calland was next up as he feintied one way and kicked the other then racing through for the touch down. Gleeson converted.

Millom didn’t give up and scored under the posts.

With brother Lewis having to leave pitch, Declan Sheridan took up the mantle and it was from his confident kick through that Paul Brearley grabbed his second before Calland rounded of the scoring with a Gleeson converted try.

Man-of-the-Match award was split between Aidan Gleeson and Paul Brearley who both had outstanding games.
