Mayfield 54 – 6 Woolston

Date published: 11 March 2014

Mayfield sealed an emphatic win over Woolston in what started out as a tight encounter. It wasn’t until the 25th minute that the deadlock was broken when sharp handling skills from the Mayfield backs led to a Craig White try out wide. Converted by Marsland, the first of his nine conversions in a perfect kicking display.

Minutes later excellent foot skills and pace from John Foy led to a 70 metre converted try which seemed to break the spirit of Woolston. Marsland again adding the extras.

Lee Atkinson quickly added a third try, again converted by Marsland, giving Mayfield an 18-0 lead.

To their credit Woolston never gave up and crossed the line after a lapse in the Mayfield attack saw a pass go astray to be intercepted by the man-of-the-match for Woolston in stand-off Dominic Ball. Converted by Butter.

After harsh words from Simpson, encouraging Mayfield to turn the screw again and not let the away side back into the match, the ever impressive Hargreaves thundered over for a typical charging effort from 20 yards out breaking several tackles along the way.

Half time: Mayfield 24 - 0 Woolston

The second half started in much the same fashion as the first with both teams defence on top, but it didn’t take as long for Mayfield to cross over again with the marauding Yewdale.

Atkinson and Yewdale, again, crossed over for two further converted tries.

John Foy capped off a masterful performance with the second of his brace.

Man-of-the-match Hargreaves raced over to cap a good day all round with Mayfield scoring nine tries in total, all converted by Marsland, to hand Mayfield a well-earned win.

Coach Duncan Simpson said at the end of the game: "The work we have done in training this week really came to the fore and the team bonding, moral and ethics are starting to reap the rewards. With more emphasis on structured play, we will certainly give a lot of teams a few headaches this season."

Simpson called for additional effort in training to build on the "great foundation and experience we have through training with the first team, giving them the belief they can compete at an escalated level".

Simpson added: "We have a free week next week, so this gives me a perfect opportunity to nurture the belief and the desire within the players ready for our next outing against Blackbrook a week on Saturday."

Training is at Hopwood Hall College on Tuesday and Thursday at 6.00pm.
