Bank Quay Bulls 18 - 32 Mayfield U18

Date published: 17 March 2014

Mayfield, travelling with only 15 players due to injuries and other commitments, won a hard fought game at Warrington side, Bank Quay Bulls.

Playing on a woeful surface, the early exchanges were even as both sets of forwards tried to impose themselves.

Daley, Schofield, Oliveria, Campbell, Mellors and Poole all worked hard for Mayfield with Sheridan, Gartland and Ratu pulling the strings.

The home defence was strong though, and using quick line defence were able to prevent the ball moving to the flanks where there was space.

The longer the game went without a score, the more Mayfield's dominance was turning into frustration and errors started to creep in.

However, when Greaves and Donnelly joined the forward line the breakthrough came. Greaves powered onto a ball and scored a great try despite the attention of several Bulls defenders. Gartland added the two.

Sheridan was starting to control things around the ruck and was able to confuse his markers to go through and score a good solo try. Gartland again on target.

Half time: Bank Quay Bulls 0 - 12 Mayfield U18

At the start of the second half, Bulls, playing downhill with the wind and revved up for action, forwards were interested and their scrum half created a hole on the wing to halve the deficit.

While Mayfield were still  reeling, Bulls scored two more converted tries to take a six point lead.

McEvoy had work to do at full back to prevent further tries as Mayfield dug in for a battle in the last twenty minutes.

Wetshokanda, Dube and Sibanda came in and took work off the forwards to get field position.

A 'back to basics call' was answered as good ball return was rewarded when Schofield powered over the line for a converted try.

Sheridan quickly added another try.

Mayfield had weathered the storm and when Dube finished a great move in the corner it was game over.

Man of the match awards went to Sheridan, Schofield and Wetshokanda.

Next up is a home game with Sherrington on the 30 March.
