A team from Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club put on a master class of rowing and sculling on the River Ouse in York to win 16 gold medals, awarded to six crews, at the Yorkshire Head on Saturday 15 March.

On a cold, sunny and hectic day with over 200 crews racing downstream on a 5.1km course finishing alongside the magnificent York Minster, the crews gave exceptional performances.

In a large field of competitors in the IM3.4+ category, George Kershaw, Charles Redshaw, Alex Barnett and Reece Handley, driven on by their cox, Ben Yusuf won their coxed four rowing event in impressive style.

George Kershaw and Reece Handley raced again and sculled their way to victory in the doubles IM2.2x category, achieving the fastest time of the day in all doubles categories.

harles Redshaw, won gold with a 15 second margin in the single sculls category, IM3.1x.

Over the age of 27 the term Masters is used in competition and the sculling coxless quad crew, Bob Jepson, Keith Lawton, Paul Clay and Tim Booth put in a supreme effort to win gold against some strong opposition in the MasE.4x- category.

Tim Booth and Keith Lawton powered their way to victory in the double sculls category, MasE.2x.

Katie Hargreaves and Leanna Daniels won gold in the WIM3.2x double sculls category. Katie and Leanna won with an impressive time of 21:04.9, several minutes faster than many of the mens crews who competed throughout the day.

A club spokesman said: "Against clubs from all over the country the day was hard fought and HLRC was represented by a dedicated, hard working team whose tough regime of training was rewarded with a host of gold medals and well deserved victories."
