Heywood BMX riders qualify for World Championships

Date published: 22 April 2014

Six riders from Roch Valley Raiders BMX Club, based in Queen’s Park, Heywood, have qualified to ride at the BMX World Challenge Championships, which will be held in Ahoy Rotterdam from 23 July to 27 July 2014.

The 2014 BMX World Challenge Championships qualification is based on the rider’s national rankings. National rankings take into account a rider’s best 12 results during the race season. This event is open to the top 16 riders from each age category from each country to compete for the top eight world ranking and ultimately the world number one plate.

Lewis Rostron aged 16 is the clubs youngest to have qualified from Roch Valley Raiders. Lewis joined the BMX club in 2012 and regularly rides with his brother Adam aged 14 and father Paul. The Rostron family have been active members of the club racing at regional and national level and are always on hand when the club holds work and maintenance days at the track in Queen’s Park.

Skye Beagley, 16, travels from Huddersfield to participate in the club's gates and coaching sessions at the popular BMX track on Saturday mornings.

Craig Robertson owner of Ride On bike shop in Rossendale was an active member of Roch Valley Raiders BMX group in the 1980s and re-joined when the club re-started in 2009 after receiving funds from the criminal justice board, has also qualified. Other adult members who have qualified are Adrian Mather, Julie Barrett and Richard Barrett all who live in Heywood.

The club is now raising funds to enable these club members to attend the BMX World Challenge Championships in Rotterdam. Local company D. Turner & Son Machine Removals Ltd and the friends of Queen’s Park group have offered to donate money to help ease the financial worry for the families. If you would like to make a donation toward getting the riders to Rotterdam please contact Yvonne Mills on 07954 413 061 or email heywoodbmx@live.co.uk
