Rochdale Lacrosse Club chasing four trophies

Date published: 23 April 2014

As the 125th season of Lacrosse in Rochdale comes to a close, Rochdale Lacrosse Club club has an unprecedented four teams participating in the North of England Men’s Lacrosse Finals (FLAGS) to be held at their Bridgefold Road ground over the weekend of the 26 and 27 April.

Rochdale has hosted the event for many years due to the excellent facilities they have on offer.

The best quality of Lacrosse in the North of England will be seen over the weekend finals.

The Senior Flags final is one of the oldest Lacrosse competitions in the world and it has been the premier event on the northern lacrosse calendar since 1883.

The first team will be playing in the Stockport Cup final, the “B” team in the Nigel Wayne Cup, the U14s and U12s in their respective Plate Finals against Cheadle and Poynton A.

The Northern Flags weekend is the culmination of a busy year of Lacrosse, which has seen a dramatic rise in participation and over 140 new clubs formed across the UK, many in universities.

The Rochdale club has also benefited from this wave of interest. Two coaches, Andrew Tanneberger from Charlotte, North Carolina and Chris Birchenough, a home-grown coach, have been busy coaching in over 25 local schools and have helped out at Bradford University and spent some time coaching juniors at Oldham Lacrosse Club.

One local school, Wardle St James Primary, has reached the English Lacrosse Primary School Pop Lacrosse Finals at the University of Hertfordshire on 15 June 2014 when 24 UK primary schools will compete to become national champions.

Later this year, a number of Rochdale players will be making their way to Denver to represent and support England in the World Lacrosse Championships and will be hoping to meet up with former Rochdale player and England talisman Nicky Watson, who has been playing for Adelphi University in the US having been granted a lacrosse scholarship.
