Fifty goal challenge smashed by Pennine Black

Date published: 21 May 2014

Pennine Black scored an amazing 27 goals in five matches to secure and surpass their 50 goal target for Cystic Fibrosis Awareness.

Pennine went into the first week of the Woodbank Tournament knowing 18 more goals would give them their target of 50 goals in May.

First up was Feniscowles Reds, a team who they have never met before. Pennine quickly took control and were never threatened at all, running out 4-0 winners with goals from Thomas, Logan, Brodie and Alfie.

The second game was against Rossendale Valley and was a much tougher affair. Pennine fought back hard when Rossendale took an early lead with the boys never panicking. Once Logan had smashed home the equaliser there was only ever going to be one winner and it came from the boot of Thomas with another wonderful solo effort and Pennine marched on.

Up next was Littleborough and the difficult encounter didn’t stop Pennine's passing game coming to the fore; some of the football was sensational and they cruised to another 4-0 victory. Lucas was rewarded for yet another dynamic display with two goals and two assists and Thomas and Alfie chipped in with other goals in another assured performance.

The 50 goal target was now a possibility and the boys turned up the heat in the next game against Ramsbottom United Rebels. In a powerful display, the Rebels were completely overwhelmed 6-0. Thomas was the leading tormentor with his four goals, with team mates Logan and Lucas completing the scoring.

If Pennine were impressive in their previous game, they certainly saved the best until last. Sitting on 48 goals, they were determined to hit their target against Walshaw Blacks. What happened next was the perfect ending to a fantastic day of football. The boys ran out 11-0 winners and in a seemingly Hollywood scripted moment, it was Alfie,  Freddie Chant's older brother, who smashed home the 50th goal.

Cue the wild, shirtless celebrations that would have seen a rake of yellow cards in the Premier League. Walshaw were chasing shadows for the entire game. Thomas scored five, Alfie three, Logan two and Lucas one. The day finished with Pennine having won five out of five with 27 goals scored and only one conceded.

With the boys reaching their target with games still to play, a revised target of 65 goals was set. This is to signify the 65 roses/Cystic Fibrosis motto.
