Double gold for Katie Hargreaves as Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club enjoy success at Trentham Regatta

Date published: 11 June 2014

Katie Hargreaves won two golds as the Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club enjoyed a successful day at Trentham Regatta in the beautiful surroundings of Trentham Gardens on Sunday 8 June. Katie won a single scull race and joined Leanna Daniels to win gold in the double sculls.

Other senior wins included the men’s quad of Mike Smith, Jason Hardman, Bob Moore and Eric Kent who beat their opponents from Liverpool Victoria RC in a straight final race by a considerable distance.

The women’s double scull, Julie and Penny, and the women’s rowing coxed four battled hard but were both just beaten. John and Fiona in a mixed novice race, competing for the first time together; and Martin Bullock with his double partner, Andy Archbold, also fought hard against strong opposition, and although Martin and Andy won their first race, they could not repeat the feat in the final. Ruth Archbold and Janet Lowe in their first double sculls races won twice with great style and determination to take gold.

Matthew Harris competed in two single scull categories winning gold in the senior IM3 category, and just beaten in his second heat in the J16 competition. Matthew’s proud Mum, Rachel Harris, as HLRC Junior Co-ordinator, has the mammoth task of ensuring the juniors are trained, prepared, and all ready for their races throughout the Regatta day – a task she executes perfectly and with the gratitude and support of all the juniors and their parents.

The juniors were involved in many races with varying success. The WJ14 quad – Amy Aspinall, Harriet Jackson, Jess Pilkington, Sophie Webb and cox, Gabriella Fennell fought hard but lost in a close semi-final to a home crew from Trentham. The WJ16 double sculls, Amy Bullock and Laura Aspinall also got to their semi-final. In the WJ14 double sculls Amy Aspinall and Sally Tisdall (rowing up a year) fought hard but were just beaten by a strong Trafford crew, as were Harriet Jackson and Jess Pilkington in the same category. Harriett and Jess had come through their heat, winning by a canvas, one of the closest races of the day.

In the J14 double sculls, Tom Bullock and Tom Swithenbank won their first race in fine style but were just beaten in a close semi-final despite a strong finish. Tom Swithenbank also reached the semi-final of the J14 single scull after a fine win in his first heat. However, HLRC did have a win in the J14 single sculls with Alastair Holbrough putting in an excellent performance to win three races and take gold.

The WJ13 single sculls event saw 3 HLRC rowers entered. Hannah Lowe and Sally Tisdall both had good wins in their heats, but it was their colleague, Molly Archbold who put in an outstanding performance to win her three races and take gold. In the WJ13 double sculls, Hannah Lowe and Molly Archbold were competing on the first anniversary of their first race at Trentham last year. They won all three races to take gold and make it one year unbeaten in their age category.

It was a very successful day for HLRC with an impressive 20 plus heats won and seven golds. Club Captain, Ian John, said it was “fantastic to see many competing, and even those who did not win rowed really well and should be proud of themselves.”
