Myton 18 – 34 Mayfield

Date published: 30 June 2014

Mayfield continued their excellent run of results with a hard fought win at in form Myton on Saturday.

This was a below par performance for the Rochdale side but they still managed a comfortable victory against the third placed team in the division.

As is now par for the course Mayfield gave away three penalties in the first five minutes to give their hosts some much needed possession, but they never really capitalised on this only managing a penalty to give them a 2 – 0 lead.

Mayfield showed great resolve in their defensive efforts with Jack Sampson, Callum Marriott, Matty Moores and Liam Whalley leading the way against the big Humberside pack.

Despite all the possession and pressure the home side never really looked like troubling Matt Calland's side.

Mayfield were unlucky not to take the lead after a great move down the left inspired by Todd O’Brien ended with Joe Qanuici held up over the line.

This signalled Mayfield's intent and within minutes Rob Kershaw collected a neat kick through from Sam Butterworth and slipped a neat pass to the supporting Ryan Bradbury who powered twenty metres to cross the line for a Butterworth converted try.

Mayfield were now in full flow and looking good with the forwards proving too strong for the opposition.

With twenty minutes gone the penalty count was seven to one with Mayfield being punished for the most innocuous of infringements; despite this they tried to settle into some sort of a rhythm with Butterworth and Paul Brearley taking control of the game.

Marriott and Aidan Gleeson made the hard yards upfield helped out by Seta Tala and Jack Sampson whenever they could.

Brearley took possession feigned to pass and put in a perfect kick which he managed to collect himself and scoot round the defence to extend Mayfield's lead. Butterworth added the two.

Mayfield sat back and admired what they had done rather than pushing on and putting the game out of reach. Myton were no dummies and made the most of this as they grabbed two tries to level the score before the half time whistle.

The first twenty minutes of the second half belonged to Declan Sheridan, who proved too hot to handle for the Myton defence; every time he took the ball he either made yards or provided the perfect pass for the first receiver and when ten minutes into the half he scooted from half back, he touched down without a finger laid on him.

Sheridan was again involved as he worked the forwards out of their half with Si Moore and Nick Hargreaves working hard for the cause. Sheridan then provided the pass that put Brearley in for his second, again converted by Butterworth.

This purple patch from the young hooker effectively sealed the game for Mayfield.

Sheridan was again instrumental as he linked with Aidan Gleeson as Gleeson put in the kick which was collected by Jack Sampson to race over the line. Butterworth again converted.

The Myton side just couldn’t handle Sheridan and his game was ended after a cynical elbow to the face lead to him having to be helped from the pitch.

There was no let up for Myton though as O’Brien re- entered the fray and immediately galvanised the forwards with Si Moore, Matty Moores and Liam Whalley finding the field position, which enabled O’Brien to put Qanuici over for another Butterworth converted score.

Myton weren’t finished though and they enjoyed a strong last ten minutes as they tried to gain some respectability with the scoreline - they achieved this after a high tackle was penalised allowing them to grab the final score.

Declan Sheridan was awarded the Man-of-the-Match for Mayfield despite only spending 30 minutes on the pitch. His work rate was inspiring and lifted his team mates at a time when they needed it. Si Moore and Matty Moores also performed well along with Brearley and Butterworth.
