Mayfield 60 – 10 Eccles

Date published: 14 July 2014

Eccles arrived at the Mayfield Sports Centre with an under strength team on Friday and were duly put to the sword by a Mayfield side still smarting from last week's cup exit at Normanton.

Fielding seven changes from that team Mayfield were more like their old selves scoring seemingly at will and defending much better than the last outing.

The large noisy crowd were treated to some excellent stuff with Sam Butterworth, Paul Brearley and the returning Wayne Corcoran running the show from the off, although Eccles somehow managed to sneak in for the first try.

The pack was in strong form with the half backs bringing the backs into play at every opportunity.

There were some brilliant tries in the first half with the pick being Aidan Gleeson out pacing the Eccles full back in a chase after Butterworths kick to score his second try and Ryan Bradbury’s 70m effort after shrugging off three defenders.

The second half was a repeat of the first with tries coming at regular intervals as the Eccles side faded in the heat.

Wayne Corcoran proved a great asset and did more than enough to show that with games under his belt he will again be a great favourite at the club.

Also standing out were Seta Tala, Liam Whalley with his two well taken tries and Sean Mulcahy who had a solid game at loose forward.

The pick of the players for the home side had to be Aidan Gleeson with a well deserved hat trick, which saw the crowd go wild as they chanted his name and Callum Marriott who picked up the Man-of-the-Match award after putting in a full eighty minute shift of non stop work.

Butterworth was again magnificent with the boot kicking ten from ten.

Try scorers: Liam Whalley 2, Matt Calland, Wayne Corcoran, Ryan Bradbury, Lee Atkinson, John Foy,  Aidan Gleeson 3.
Goals: Sam Butterworth 10.
