Date published: 27 July 2014

Middleton cyclist Joanna Rowsell claimed a gold medal for England in the 3,000 metre individual pursuit at the Commonwealth games on Friday (25 July).

The 25-year-old, who set a games record when qualifying, clocked 3:31:615 seconds to beat Australian cyclist Annette Edmondson by 3.835 seconds.

Early in the race, Joanna fell behind but quickly recovered to claim the advantage.

After her Race, she punched the air with delight as she rode a victory lap at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and raised the England flag above her head stating she was “over the moon.”

Joanna is already the world champion in the discipline and was part of the British trio that won the team pursuit at the London 2012 Olympic games.

Joanna secured England’s first gold medal for cycling in the Commonwealth Games.
