Last men standing defy Norden

Date published: 29 July 2014

With five overs left Heywood needed another 13 runs to collect a consolation point from their second team match at Woodhouse Lane on Sunday.

True, their last men were at the wicket, but they were Roger Smerthurst and Rick Purser, players with plenty of experience who might well have got those 13.

As it happened only three runs were scored against the returned pace of Harvey Fitton and Dan Buckley, but the stubborn batsmen denied Norden a fifth point.

Norden had first knock and totalled 240 for six. Opener Dan Buckley scored 46 before kicking himself when caught, and Harvey Fitton smashed 51, a knock sprinkled with sixes including one through a window of Chris Humphrey's car.

Dom Humphreys batted well for his 61, and Paul Morrell added a late 32.

Norden took wickets at regular intervals of the reply. Morrell and Ahmed each took three, Harvey Fitton took two.

Booth scored 22 for Heywood whose top scorer in 170 for nine was 'Mr Extras' with 48.
