Norden beaten by relegation threatened Werneth

Date published: 26 August 2014

Norden suffered a rare defeat on Saturday when they succumbed to an above par performance from relegation threatened Werneth.

Norden took first knock and totalled 149, and that score was always under threat during a reply which got past the 100 mark with only three wickets down.

It was only a late catch which secured Norden a consolation point for capturing seven wickets as Werneth got home with four overs to spare.

Matthew Taylor and Joe Taylor bowled well in the early stages, each taking a wicket as Norden reached 56 for two.

But it was the introduction if Zimmy Khan and Rashid Khan which cause most problems for Norden.

Between them their spin accounted for seven wickets, the former finishing with five for 29.

To a degree the Werneth cause was helped by some poor shots, and the fact that three batsmen charged the bowling, missed the deliveries, and were stumped.

A target of 150 still looked a tall order for the visitors, and they lost Zimmy Khan leg before to Hashum Malik with 20 on the board.

Ian Dronsfield was second out with the board showing 31, but Levi Thomson-Matthews and Matthew Taylor batted well to push the score along.

Thomson-Matthews was only nine short of a half century when he was crazily run out. He survived a strong appeal for leg before, and while the appeal was still echoing round the ground the batsmen set off for a suicidal run.

He was never going to make it, and out he went.

Wickets started to fall, and it looked good for Norden when Taylor was trapped leg before by Salpietro for 33.

Shaw and Rashid Khan went cheaply, but Ashworth scored a valuable unbeaten 31 to see his side to a shock win.
