Norden defeated Clifton at Stag Park

Date published: 01 September 2014

Daniel Salpietro batted throughout 50 overs to score an unbeaten 117 as Norden defeated Clifton at Stag Park on Sunday.

It was a brilliant knock by the professional who defied all bowlers as wickets tumbled at the other end on a tricky wicket of uneven bounce.

Norden totalled 216 for eight then dismissed Clifton for 126, Ollie Makin taking five for 39 with his spin from the Woodhouse Lane end.

There seemed little wrong with the wicket as Salpietro and Simon Harman put on 71, but Clifton gained a breakthrough when Harman was caught on the mid-wicket boundary for 35.

Skipper Simon North was next to go, caught behind off Ben Chapman who finished with seven for 74 and did a great job for Clifton in the absence of injured Steve Cheetham.

Run scoring became difficult as Chapman bowled 21 overs from the Shawfield end and Clifton rotated their other bowlers at the Woodhouse Lane end.

Nick Brierley was caught by Hill at mid-on for seven, Ollie Makin was bowled by Chapman without scoring, and Steve Pimm played on without scoring.

At that stage Norden were in a rut at 126 for six, but Matthew Williams stuck in with Salpietro to take the score up to 163 before Chapman hit the sticks again.

Dan Buckley popped up a return catch to Chapman, Hashum Malik was bowled and Norden were still 19 short of the 200 mark with eight down.

Salpietro reached his century with a pushed single to the off, and along with Phil Docker (10 not out) he saw out the remaining overs.

With the sun blazing down what dampness there had been in the wicket evaporated quickly, and Clifton’s reply got off to a good start through Will Davidson and Griffiths.
First to go was Griffiths who was well caught. Dan Buckley’s initial effort failed hold the ball before he dived to hold the drop.

Davidson was leg before to Makin, as was Ainscough, both wickets going down on 61.
Deputy pro’ Lee Dale and Brown featured in a hard-hitting stand, but the loss of Dale, leg before to Salpietro, signalled a collapse which saw Clifton go from 93 for three to 93 for seven.

Lord hit a bright 19 before being caught behind. Buckley took a brilliant diving catch to see off Lee Dorsey, and Borrit was stumped by Williams – Clifton all out 126.
