Joanna Rowsell to guest at sports awards

Cycling star Joanna Rowsell is to be the guest speaker at this year’s Rochdale Borough Community Sports Awards.

Joanna, who lives in Middleton, was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to cycling, Joanna, 25, is reigning Olympic, World and European champion in the team pursuit, and reigning World and also Commonwealth Games champion in the individual pursuit, having recently taken the Gold in Glasgow this year.

The Rochdale Borough Community Sports Awards is a celebration of sporting success with awards that include Coach of the Year, Club of the Year, Disabled Sports Achiever, Volunteer and Unsung Hero. A special Changing Lifestyles recognition award will also be made. Winners go on to be considered for the Greater Manchester Sports Awards held later in the year.

Gillian Bishop, Chief Executive of Link4Life, organisers of the awards, said: “Link4Life’s annual sports awards gives us the opportunity to celebrate the success of individual athletes and to recognise the every day, hard work of the borough’s many sports clubs and volunteers and the contribution they make to the lives of so many people of all ages. We are looking forward to an inspiring evening.”
