Mayfield 38 - 16 Ince Rose Bridge

Date published: 08 September 2014

With 15 minutes of this Kingstone Press Division One game played, Mayfield were showing a case of the jitters, 10 points down and not really showing any of the class for which they have become known this season.

Not to take anything away from their opponents who had a great start playing a wide fast game which Mayfield were struggling to cope with.

Once they had found their feet though the home side never looked back and Ince just couldn't live with them.

Matty Moores, Ben Butterworth and Joe Qanuici held up the defence and stopped the visitors scoring more points while Brearley and Sam Butterworth began to take control of the game.

With Todd O'Brien prompting his players at every play the ball, the pace soon picked up and Mayfield took the game by the scruff of the neck as Moores took the ball to within five metres of the line and O'Brien dropped Aidan Gleeson back on the inside as he powered through the defenders to open his sides account. Butterworth converted.

A good game of rugby was developing with the Mayfield pack beginning to dominate their opposite numbers - Gaz Ellison and Liam Whalley were again outstanding.

With half an hour gone Qanuici picked up the ball from the back of the scrum drew the man and gave Brearley a perfect pass to put him in the clear to put the scores level.

In poor conditions, the large crowd gave the team a great boost as they willed them towards victory.

With the half time whistle looming Calland showed his experience as he loitered near the Ince line and read the play brilliantly, intercepting and sprinting 80 metres. Butterworth converted to give his side the lead.

With only two minutes on the clock in the second half Whalley showed what a good player he is becoming as he stepped his way through the defence to make the score 20 - 10.

Qanuici added another cracking score soon after.

Ince attempted to stage a comeback and managed to score a converted try to make it 26 - 16 but that was the last time they troubled John Simpson on the scoreboard.

The loudest cheer of the day came on 65 mins a as Declan Sheridan showed maturity way beyond his years outwitting the Ince defence for another Butterworth converted score.

With two minutes remaining Whalley rounded off the scoring after some great work from Si Moore and Aidan Gleeson.

Another comprehensive victory for the Rochdale side after a slow start.

There were some commendable performances, Seta Tala ran well from full back and Brearley Butterworth and O'Brien ran the show for Mayfield, while Ellison Ben Butterworth and Whalley stood out in the forwards.

Mayfield Team: Seta Tala, Komai Nualamatua, Nick Hargreaves, Matt Calland, Rob Kershaw, Paul Brearley, Sam Butterworth, Matty Moores, Todd O'Brien, Aidan Gleeson, Liam Whalley, Ben Butterworth, Joe Qanuici, Gaz Ellison, Dec Sheridan, Si Moore, John Marsland.
