Date published: 21 October 2014

Amateur boxer Ali Zahid from Rochdale has won the Celtic Box Cup Tournament.

Ali, who trains at Bury Amateur Boxing Club, fought in the 69kg category during the three day competition in Southern Ireland.

In the semi finals Ali went up against Craig McCartney, who has fought over 100 amateur fights in his career. Ali went into the fight with a good plan. He boxed smart, catching his opponent unaware with sharp punches and Ali was declared the winner of the three round bout.

The final saw Ali go up against Irish fighter, 33-year-old Ferhan Redmond. 20-year-old Ali showed great spirit and came out on top again. He showed good awareness and kept his distance and was watchful throughout the fight.

Ali said: "It was a hard tournament and my training and fitness allowed me to succeed in the gruelling bout. My aim is to keep training hard and winning. I would like to thank my coaches, my parents and all of those who have supported and followed me.”

Zahid Mahammoud, proud father and mentor of Ali, added: "He has worked really hard and has put long hours in at the gym to be able to reach his goals. This caps a great year for the family especially winning the title and also completing his sports degree."

Ali is currently looking for a sponsor. If anyone is interested then contact Zahid on 07977 777252.
