Date published: 15 November 2014

Seven-year-old Mark Craven has won nine medals at the Unified Karate World Championships in Italy.

Mark, who was chosen to represent England in the championships, won a gold medal for fighting, seven silver medals for individual katas, sports sword, pairs katas and weapons and one bronze medal for weapons.

Mark’s mum Chelsea Craven said: “He did really well. We are really proud of him. I had to stop myself from crying when he was getting his medals.”

A pupil at Tonacliffe Primary School in Whitworth, Mark has been training at the Dojo on Castlemere Street, Rochdale since he was three-years-old.

“He hasn’t got any more competitions planned at the minute. He will probably be doing some more but we are just awaiting dates,” added Chelsea.

After competing in the championships Mark also completed his grading and achieved his brown belt on Thursday (13 November).

Chelsea said: “Getting his brown belt was the last test for the minute. We are really proud of him.”
