Rochdale Mayfield new signings

Date published: 20 January 2015

Rochdale Mayfield coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth added two new signings to their squad this week with the arrival of two new Australian players, Dave Wood and Tom Lavis.

Wood is  a 22-year-old back row forward or centre from the Wyong club, and Lavis, also 22, has spent the last twelve months playing for the London Chargers club. Both are looking forward to the challenge of playing at the highest amateur level in the country, the National Conference League Premier Division.

Also coming into the squad is Jack Rush, a product of the Mayfield Mustangs youth section. Rush has just spent some time with the Wigan Warriors academy side, experience he will find invaluable if he is to make a successful step up to open age rugby.

In preparation for the forthcoming season the coaching staff held an inter-club trial game under the floodlights last Friday. It was a full-bloodied affair with the NCL squad, A team and under 18s all out to show their best.

The NCL squad stormed into a commanding lead with promising efforts from Mark Biggins, Jack Rush, Liam Whalley and new boys Tom Lavis and David Wood.

The squads were then mixed together and a number of the younger players and A teamers benefitted from the quality company, particularly Lewis Butterworth, josh Schofield, Dave Ellis and billy Percy.

This was a solid preparation for next Saturday's friendly with Rochdale Hornets - at Mayfield 24th January, kick off at 2pm. £2.50 for adults, £1.50 pensioners, under 16s free.

Proceeds to the Rochdale Hornets foundation who have been active in senior’s schools recently bringing rugby league to schools under the guidance of Neil Wood and Andy Harland.

Both of the Australian lads are seeking employment and would be grateful if anyone could help. Tom Lavis served a four year apprenticeship as a locksmith back home but has also worked as a labourer while Dave Wood has experience labouring in the building trade and has also run a bar.
