Mayfield 36 – 0 Folly Lane

Date published: 04 March 2015

Despite progressing to the final of the Oldham Standard Cup on Saturday (28 February), it wasn’t plain sailing for Mayfield in their game against Folly Lane.

Folly were strong as they repelled the Mayfield attack time and time again.

It took Mayfield 28 minutes to get to the score sheet as Sam Butterworth kicked on the first tackle, catching out the visitors defence. Komai Nualamatua raced onto the ball for a great try. Butterworth converted.

There were two more tries from Mayfield before half time.

Rob Kershaw with a 90 metre race to the line after an interception. Butterworth converted.

Seta Tala proved unstoppable as he powered through the line for another try. Another conversion from Butterworth.

However, the tenacity of the Folly defence throughout the first half prevented Mayfield from getting into any sort of rhythm.

Sam Butterworth ran the show for Mayfield, ably assisted in the first half by Nick Hargreaves, Aidy Gleeson and Seta Tala.

The second half followed much of the same pattern with three more converted tries, two from the ever improving Liam Whalley and one from Gleeson.

The stand out player for Mayfield was Sean Mulcahy, whose work rate in defence was phenomenal as well as making countless forays into the opposition half in attack.

The final score was a fair reflection of Mayfield’s domination of the game.

A spokesperson for Mayfield said: “There has been plenty to work on in training this week with the coaches concentrating on ball retention after a poor completion rate throughout Saturday’s game.”

The next game for Mayfield is away at Egremont on Saturday 14 March in the Kingston Press NCL Premier Division and will be a much sterner test.
