Wardle Football Club given £25,000 from Pennines Township

Wardle Football Club has been awarded £25,000 from the Pennines Township Delegated and Funding Sub Committee following their appeal for help.

At a meeting of the committee on Wednesday (11 March), councillors agreed to help the club in their bid to raise £150,000.

Club Chairman Rick Fielding said: “For the short term, the future of the club looks rosy and, for the long term, it is going to be a long slog but if we keep going and go the distance we will get there.”

Councillor Ashley Dearnley, who is a supporter of the club and their appeal, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to grant the club with £25,000. This will ensure that they can continue their work into the future. We are now looking at other ways that we can help, possibly more funds.

“The club is one of many football teams providing activities and sport for young people and they are a really worthwhile group to support. It is really fantastic news and I look forward to them continuing in the future.”

Rick added: “Now that we have this money it is a starting point. We can now go to corporate businesses and private companies and say we need help. If we had gone into see people and said we need £150,000 and we said we had nothing it looks bad, but now we can say we have this money and it shows that we are serious and mean business.”

The club is now hoping to get temporary cabins installed so the players have somewhere to use for future games.

“The next stage is to get some temporary cabins in. Our adult’s team will now get to play at home for the first time in at least five or six weeks next week,” added Rick.

The club is also looking for an architect who can help them design a club house.

Rick said: “Now that we have some money we can start moving things forward. We need an architect to come and design something for us so we have an idea
and plans to take forward. If anyone can help us with that then that would be great.”
