Mayfield Preview

Date published: 26 March 2015

Mayfield travel down the East Lancs on Saturday to take on the mighty Leigh Miners. Miners go into the game on the back of a famous victory over semi pro club Oxford.

That win takes them into the fifth round of the challenge cup for the first time in their history, no mean feat by anybody’s standards.

Mayfield too go into the game on a high after last week’s thrilling victory over Thatto Heath.
Last week’s second half performance by Mayfield was something to behold as they demolished the opposition, scoring 40 unanswered points. The Sheridan brothers were instrumental in the resurgence, along with Sam Butterworth and Eric Johnson they orchestrated some fantastic rugby league, backed by a class set of forwards with Sean Mulcahy, Joe Quanici, Gaz Ellison and Aidan Gleeson. The second row pairing of Liam Whalley and Ben Butterworth also made an invaluable contribution especially in the first half as their work, which never dipped throughout the game, kept the team within touching distance.

Rob Kershaw will be hoping to add to his total with three tries in two outings in a game that Mayfield must feel they have a chance of doing well in.

This is a close start to the season with no side having won both of their games, only Miners have a 100% record but they have only played one due to Challenge Cup commitments.

Mayfield NWML side also have a short away trip travelling to Accrington. The team had a great victory last week over Leyland Warriors with some outstanding performances. Fitness began to tell in the end and the Warriors staged a comeback, but Mayfield had enough in the tank to hold them off and claim the points.

This week’s opponents have lost both games up to now but will be a tough team on their own pitch. Mayfield will be looking to field a strong side and bring the two points home.
