Mayfield Preview

Date published: 30 April 2015

After last week's long distance heroics Mayfield are closer to home Saturday as they take on Saddleworth in the Conference Cup.

Mayfield go into the game as favourites but know that counts for nothing in Mayfield Saddleworth games.

Mayfield have had the upper hand recently but will take nothing for granted as they go all out to win the game and progress to the next round.

This is a competition Mayfield have a real chance in and they will be out to prove that in Saddleworth.

The Rochdale side have been playing some great rugby this season and are faring better than some predicted in the premier division.

A major factor has been the pairing of sam Butterworth and Paul Brearley, two quality players who are really complementing each other.

Also the Sheridan Brothers have had a huge impact this season with Lewis returning from a spell at Hornets and Declan staking his claim for a regular spot on the team sheet.

The inclusion of Declan has enabled Calland to rotate him with regular hooker Todd O'Brien; this has paid dividends giving the team a fresh pair of legs at acting half back at all times, an important factor at the highest level.

The Mayfield forwards were superb last season but have taken a while to get up to speed in the premier division. They have improved week after week and last week's performance at Hull was their best yet with Mark Biggins and Joe Quanici leading the way.

It wasn't all those two though with Sean Mulcahy and Gaz Ellison coming off the bench to keep the momentum going.

Saturday's encounter will no doubt be a tough one but Mayfield will be hoping to maintain the standard they have set and have enough to be able to ease past a Saddleworth side who have struggled so far this season.
