Newby steers Bolton League to victory over Central Lancashire League

Oliver Newby steered the Bolton League to victory over the Central Lancashire League at Milnrow CC on Sunday.

Bolton were seemingly on the rocks at 139 for six chasing a winning target of 203, but the former Lancashire player, supported by the other tail-enders, hit an unbeaten 34 to help his team over the line with eight wickets down.

Newby got the chance to stage his late heroics after Paul Ingram (65) and Phil Cavill (31) had put Bolton well on their way.

Ingram was finally caught behind by Danny Pawson after edging a delivery from home captain Simon North, then Syd De Silva was caught in the slips, and Jake Sandham picked up a couple of wickets as the CLL took control.

Home hopes were high, but Newby put an end to those hopes aided and abetted by Will Halton who was unbeaten on 11.

Halton had a life when the ball appeared to cannon off a glove as Pawson tried to take a flying catch behind the stumps, but Newby would still have been there.

The CLL had started their earlier innings slowly in the face of some good bowling from Newby and Adam Street. But it was a case of slowly but surely as Jake Hooson and James Rawlinson put on 54 before Hooson offered a return catch to Halton.

Wickets then fell at regular intervals. Rawlinson was out for 31, North made 37, Dean Morris 31 and Ben Chapman 31, but none of those went on to compile a real match-winning score as Ingram rotated his bowlers well.
