Salpietro hits 154 not out for Norden

Date published: 24 August 2015

Daniel Salpietro followed up his unbeaten 130 against Littleborough by blasting the Clifton attack for an unbeaten 154 at Stag Park on Saturday.

The Norden professional never gave a chance throughout the 50 overs, and he certainly made a mess of some bowling averages.

Steve Cheetham went for 67 runs in 10 overs, and visiting professional Gareth Cross had 89 knocked off him in 18 overs.

Salpietro scored 32 of his first 35 runs with hard-hit boundaries and in all his knock included 17 fours and five sixes.

Opening partner Simon Harman was on six when caught by Dean Morris, and Rehan Udwadia went without addition, bowled by Rob Reade, but from then on the runs really flowed.

Ash Gowers hit 45 before being bowled by Morris, and Simon North slammed 48 in quick time before being stumped by Brown to provide Morris with another scalp.

There was still time for Norden to add another 18 runs – and all of them came from Salpietro’s bat.

Clifton made a slow but steady start to their reply, the youthful Will Davidson and Sam Dorsey putting on 41 before the latter was caught behind by stand-in keeper Greg Tattersall.
Gareth Cross looked in form with three fours and a six in his 21, but he then found the safe hands of Simon Harman in the covers and it was 86 for two.

Nitin Srivastava was leg before to Salpietro five runs later, but it then became a toil for Norden as Davidson and Morris attacked the bowling.

At one stage it looked as though the duo would carry Clifton to victory, but on 218 Morris was caught by Simon North to give Chris Hartley the first of his two wickets in his second spell with the ball.

Davidson reached his century but then top edged a delivery from Hashum Malik to be caught by Tattersall, and Norden were back in the driving seat.

Joe Brown made 14 to help take the total up to 249, Evans having gone for nought and Cheetham for two.

But with only one over remaining it looked as though the Stags would have to settle for four points instead of five.

Second ball in Brown was caught by Salpietro, fourth ball in Reade was bowled by Malik, and next delivery Barton was bowled by Malik who finished with six for 67.
