Norden and South African Jon Jon Smuts have agreed in principle for him to become Stags’ professional in 2016.

The 27-year-old is a right-hand opening bat and orthodox left-arm bowler who plays for Warriors and Eastern Province.

His first class record in 71 matches is 4251 runs at an average of 33.73. He has also taken 88 wickets.

In 2010/11 he was voted as Warriors player of the season.

Smuts played in England in 2010 when he joined Northern League club Chorley as professional until he had to return to South Africa to join the Emerging Players squad.

His time with Chorley ended in July, but he was still top of the league batting averages at the end of the campaign.

He also broke Chorley’s individual one-match record with 177 not out in a match at Carnforth.

His century came in 46 overs, and in the final four overs of the innings he smashed 77 runs with ten sixes and three fours.

Norden cricket chairman Dexter Fitton said: “We had to move quickly to find a replacement for Daniel Salpietro, and Jon Jon fits the bill perfectly. I am delighted, and I think everyone at the club will be delighted once they see him in action over here.

“Our former professional Michael Price speaks highly of him and we feel we will be getting one of the best available players.”

Salpietro, who has been with Norden for two of the most successful seasons in the club’s history, is going back down under to Tasmania where he will be coaching a Premier club and setting up a sportswear business.”
