Mayfield 54 - 4 Hull Dockers

Date published: 19 October 2015

Mayfield progressed to the quarter final stages of the Kingstone Press NCL Premier Division play offs with a comfortable victory over Hull Dockers at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday.

The large crowd were entertained from start to finish with Mayfield scoring freely and restricting the opposition to just the one try.

The first score came courtesy of Dave Wood who followed a kick through on the last after Joe Quanici had been held up over the line. Butterworth converted.

Dockers pushed back and were unlucky not to level the scores, instead Dec Sheridan picked up a loose ball on his own line and made his way into the Hull half of the field before Todd Obrien found Dave Wood who powered over the line with three defenders on his back.

O'Brien was next on the scoresheet after a class move involving Dec Sheridan and Paul Brearley.

Undeterred Dockers came back at Mayfield and managed a score after a great ball from their prop.

Butterworth, with his now trademark restart, regained the ball and Mayfield worked the ball downfield with Mark Biggins and the in form Liam Whalley making great yards. Up popped Dec Sheridan then to capitalise on the position and extend his sides lead. Butterworth converted.

Not to be outdone Lewis Sheridan further increased the lead on the stroke of half time with a well taken try after good work from Komai Nualamatua, Butterworth again popping over the conversion.

Half time: Mayfield 26 - 4 Hull Dockers

Dockers put some steel into their defensive efforts and it was almost fifteen minutes before Mayfield managed to get on the scoreboard again, this time it was brute strength as the powerful Nick Hargreaves burst onto a well-timed pass, and with four tacklers on him showed great strength and determination to cross for a deserved score under the posts.

The last 20 minutes saw Mayfield add a further four tries through Lewis Sheridan, Liam Whalley, Rob Kershaw and the final score from Paul Brearley after a cheeky one-on-one ball steal saw him race 20 metres to ground the ball. Butterworth tagged on three conversions.

The score line was a fair reflection of Mayfield’s dominance in the game and showed that with the right mind set they can defend as well as they can attack, a quality that will be much needed if they are to progress any further in the play offs.
