Date published: 22 March 2009

The Mayor, Councillor Robin Parker and the Mayoress, Mrs Ann Jones welcomed guests to the Town Hall last night (Saturday 21 March) for the Mayor's Charity Ball 2009.

In his speech Mayor Parker explained the beneficiaries of the night would be Springhill Hospice and The British Heart Foundation. Mayor Parker said The British Heart Foundation was close to his heart as he had been found to be suffering from stenosis, a congenital heart disease. He joked about having looked up the symptoms on the internet and said: "the main one is dropping dead! Obviously I didn’t as I'm still here; thankfully they caught me in time."

The distinguished guests included the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester and his Consort, the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, the Mayor and Mayoress of Manchester, the Mayor and Mayoress of Trafford, the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton, the Mayor and Mayoress of Tameside, the Mayor and Mayoress of Oldham, the Mayor and Mayoress of Wigan, the Mayor and Mayoress of Bury, the Mayor and Mayoress of Salford and the Mayor and Mayoress of Whitworth.

Local dignitaries included Paul Rowen MP, Deputy Mayor of Rochdale Keith Swift and a number of local councillors.
