'Wok and Woll' a winner for Mayor's charities

A rock 'n' roll night with a difference raised more than £500 for the Mayor's charities.

More than 100 people flocked to the China City restaurant, on Nelson Street, on Wednesday night (21 October), to listen to two top local rock bands, Shameless and Electric Gypsies, and enjoy a Chinese buffet; the event living up to its 'Wok and Woll' billing.

And it was so successful that Rochdale's Mayor, Councillor Keith Swift, is hoping to hold more music nights in local restaurants to give them a boost during the recession.

"It was an extremely successful evening," said the Mayor. "My charities cover all types of music so it was great to offer something different. I am very greatful to the Backdoor Music Project for providing both of the bands free of charge, they were a great example of the talent that we have in Rochdale.

"The restaurant was able to boost its midweek business so it was a success all round. I would urge any other restaurants that want to host one of these nights to get in touch. If they can sell the tickets we can provide our support."

The Mayor treated guests to his famous Frank Sinatra renditions before rapper James Roe (AKA Truffles) offered another different musical take on the evening. The bands then played long into the night, with many fans not leaving the restaurant until turned midnight.

The money raised will go towards funding the Mayor's charities, which are the Backdoor Music Project, Rochdale Youth Orchestra and Rochdale Music Service.
