Man of Rochdale - Ken Davies

Date published: 24 November 2006

The lsquo;Man of Rochdale’, one of Rochdale’s most distinguished awards, has this year been named as Ken Davies. The award was presented at the annual 'Men of Rochdale’ Luncheon, that has, since its inception thirteen years ago, been held annually in aid of Springhill Hospice. As well as raising vital funds for the Hospice, the Luncheon also honours the man who through public nominations and then final analysis by the lsquo;Man of Rochdale’ Committee, is considered to have contributed the most to the community of Rochdale.

Ken Davies said: quot;It was rather a big surprise to receive the award lsquo;Man of Rochdale’. Obviously I am delighted to  receive the award; I’m thrilled to bits for myself and also for everyone who has helped me over the 15 years I have been involved with the hospice and many other charities."

Speaking after the event, Ian Jenkins, Springhill Hospice Fundraising Manager said: quot;A very successful day, we were delighted to see so many gentlemen at the luncheon and were particularly thrilled that Ken Davies received the award.  So many people are aware of what Ken has done for the Hospice but are maybe not so aware of what he has done for other charities in and around the town over many many years.

"Our thanks go to sponsors Barton Kendal and Jackson Jackson amp; Sons Ltd for their support of the event and our thanks also go out to everybody who either came on the day to join us or who sent donations in support of the event if they were unable to attend.  I must just say a big thank you to guest speaker Duggie Brown who stood in for Mick Miller at the last moment when Mick couldn't make it.

"All in all it was a fabulous event and I have had very positive feedback.  Next year's Men of Rochdale Luncheon will take place at the Town Hall on 30 November 2007 and I look forward to seeing old and new friends there."

Previous holders of the title are last years holder, Steve Cohen, plus David Grime, Brian Beal, Fred Bowker, Jack Hammill, Dr. Jack Taylor, Gerry Sullivan, Frank Lever, Jim Rowbotham, Joe Salt, Marcus Hilton MBE and the very first recipient, former Mayor of Rochdale, Arnold Bagnall.
