Happy Mother's Day

Reporter: Laura Wild
Date online: 14 March 2010

Mothering Sunday, a chance to say thank you for everything that wonderful woman in your life has done for you and to let them know you care.

Rochdale Online reporter Laura Wild visited restaurants in the borough today to find out about all the special mums out there and what their children think about them.

The first port of call was the John Milne in Milnrow, where Gaynor Whitham was celebrating with her two and half year old son Jacob. Little Jacob was giddy and looking forward to playing in the sun – what better excuse than that to spend some time with his mum!

The Cheeseman family from Bolton travelled to the Bella Vista on Wildhouse Lane, because it is their favourite and they felt it suitable for the occasion. Michelle Cheeseman summed her mum, Carole, up in one word: “Fabulous”

One lucky mother dining at the Bella Vista has a busy week ahead, Kathleen Kershaw will celebrate her 90th birthday this week and had been taken out today with her two daughters, Pat and Margaret and son-in-law Ken.

Pat and Ken weren’t sure they could get back to Rochdale in time because they had been at another function in Yorkshire so they decided to surprise Mrs Kershaw.

The sisters said that their mum was ‘lovely’, Margaret added: “She has always been there for us, she is very independent and at almost 90 she still has a mind of her own.”

At the Top Tier Bar and Grill, the Simpson family were marking the occasion with a meal for two generations of the family, Winifred Simpson was accompanied by her daughter Kathryn and granddaughter Molly.

Kathryn, had very kind words to say about her mum, she said: “My mum is absolutely brilliant she has always been understanding, encouraging and supportive about anything I have ever done even at times when she knew things would be difficult she has always supported me and been completely behind me.”

At the next table were three generations of the Barnes family, who all joined together on this happy occasion for a meal and a catch up.

At Hollingworth Lake, mother and daughter Karen and Kirsty Grace were having a quiet drink, Kirsty said: “I have the best mum in the world; she is more like a sister than a mum.”

Below is a poem about Mother's Day, let your mum know how much you love her today:

A Mother loves right from the start.
She holds her baby close to her heart.
The bond that grows will never falter.
Her love is so strong it will never alter.
A Mother gives never ending Love.
She never feels that she has given enough.
For you she will always do her best.
Constantly working, there's no time to rest.
A Mother is there when things go wrong.
A hug and a kiss to help us along.
Always there when we need her near.
Gently wipes our eyes when we shed a tear.
So on this day shower your Mother with Love.
Gifts and presents are nice but that is not enough.
Give your Mother a day to have some peace of mind.
Be gentle, be good, be helpful, be kind.
Happy Mother's Day.
