One of the most popular race meetings of the year has taken place this week at Ascot and thanks to the Rochdale branch of the N.S.P.C.C, Rochdale had a race meeting of its own on Thursday 22 June with an Ascot Ladies Day.
Ladies Day at Ascot is always a spectacular occasion, with the female race-goers all wearing posh hats and fancy frocks. It was no different at Nutter’s Restaurant where the Rochdale Ladies Day was hosted, with some spectacular hats on show.
144 people packed into Nutter’s and the whole event had an Ascot feel to it, with VIP's having their own Royal Enclosure, whilst the rest of the guests dined in the stalls.
Even the menu, cooked by Andrew Nutter and his band of professional chefs, was based on horse racing - guests enjoyed 'Ascot Turf' soup for starter and ended with a chocolate dessert of 'Jockey Whips, Red Rum and Shergar'.
After the lunch it was down to the serious business, the races! Guests placed their bets on four races and gained points based on where their horse finished in the race, with ten points being gained for picking a winner.
Rochdale Online provided their services for the second year running; enabling all the races to be shown live on two big screens.
The ladies gathered around to watch the action unfold and there were wild cheers and groans of disappointment from the punters after each race.
The event came to a close with prize draws for two raffles and the announcement of the race winners. There was also the presentation to the winner of the much coveted lsquo;most exotic hat’ competition. Alice Wolfe's was the day’s top hat and she can enjoy a pamper day with Jamilla Paul thanks to her efforts. She told Rochdale Online: ldquo; It’s been a fabulous day and I’ll wear an even bigger hat next time! We’ve had an excellent meal and a brilliant day. Some of my friends came last year and it’s been even more popular this year.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Andrew Nutter, head chef and owner of Nutter’s, who travelled through the night from Germany after following England’s World Cup fortunes: ldquo; It’s been fantastic and a great turnout as usual. It’s been exhausting but really good, especially after I raced over from Germany and got back at 7am, but it’s been well worth it and creating and cooking the racing menu was a real pleasure,” he said.
The raffle proved particularly popular, with fifteen prizes on offer, including a 12 month membership at Motorcise Ladies Only Gym that was won by Wendy Jackson. The draw for a separate raffle for a free meal at Nutter’s restaurant provided similar excitement and was won by event organiser and Chairman of the Rochdale N.S.P.C.C Lis Kay.
The next prizes to be given away were to the top punters, and the top prize was shared by Rachael Robinson and John Anderson who gained 30 points for their picks for backing three winners out of four. William Hill donated some of the raffle prizes. Ivy Geldard won the boobie-prize, she even picked one horse that didn’t run!
The event came to a close with a speech by Debbie Hardwick of the N.S.P.C.C in which she alerted the guests to some alarming facts about child abuse, including the shock statement that one in two children are in some way abused by someone who should be caring for them. She said that thanks to the event: ldquo;you will all make a difference.”
The total raised was over pound;4,000.
