Year 5 Shawclough Primary school students paid us a visit this week as part of a ‘Poems from Prehistory’ Workshop which was based around the recent Must Farm Quarry Bronze Age Settlement discoveries. Students undertook a range of activities and we hope that a booklet of their poems will be published soon and featured on our website. For more details, contact Mr De Courcey.

Two new exciting CEPA competitions are available for learners across all years. To tie-in with the launch of rehearsals for our latest production, ‘Scar of the Sabretooth’ and our involvement with the ‘Earthworks’ Project. We have two opportunities for students. The first competition invites students to complete a Giant Prehistoric Wordsearch and the second competition requires learners to design a costume for one of the central characters of the drama. Well done to Year 9 Drama students who went along to Hopwood Hall College Middleton Campus this week for the first session of the ‘Speaking for Ourselves’ Project. Our learners took part in a range of activities that explore notions of identity, community and belonging. The group worked alongside students from two other secondary schools in Greater Manchester. The next session takes place on Tuesday 26 January. All students involved should return their visit reply forms as soon as possible. For more details, see Mr De Courcey.

Year 11 BTEC Drama and Dance students are invited to attend coursework catch-up sessions every Friday after school from 2.45pm until 4pm in G3. For more details, see Mr De Courcey or Ms Wystawnoha.

A reminder that Drama Club takes place every Wednesday after school in the Drama Studio and is open to all years. The club offers a range of games and fun improvisational activities for all learners. For more details, see Mr Mvula.

Our Arts Award Expo 3 takes place at the end of January and offers the parents of Year 7 learners involved in the ‘What’s In A Word?’ project the opportunity to discover what their children have achieved to date. The session takes place over an hour after school and students will be required to explain their practical portfolio work to visitors. Refreshments will be served and admission is free. Our Year 9 Dance students became experts for the day performing at Healey Primary School and then workshopping and teaching dance to the Year 9 pupils there on Monday and Tuesday this week. A great session was had aby all concerned. Our Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and the Year 6 pupils developed dance pieces based on Chance.

Throughout the day on Tuesday this week, 5 Year 8 classes worked with The Peoples History Museum Manchester as part of the Earth Works Collaborate Project and the History Curriculum on ‘Papers, protest and Peterloo’. Our Year 8 pupils were enthused by the performance and written tasks which they can now use back in the classroom to develop their learning.

On Wednesday last week, teachers from our feeder schools and primaries across Rochdale, joined us and a representative from The Peoples Museum in our creative meeting. We discussed a range of exciting projects, ideas and ventures. Watch this space for more detail.

We are looking forward to attending Burry College next Tuesday, 26 January where 20 of our pupils from Year 8 will be spending the afternoon exploring the use of language learning at college and in the workplace.
