Wardle Academy’s Magical Night of Spells

Date published: 09 February 2016

The second annual Harry Potter Book Night took place on Thursday, 4 February at libraries, schools and book shops up and down the country.

Wardle Academy’s library opened its doors to plenty of young Potter fans from Year 7 and 8 for a magical ‘Night of Spells’.

The evening started with a welcome and ‘Sorting Ceremony’ where pupils were placed into the 4 houses, Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. 4 members of Staff - Mrs Travis, Mrs Colley, Miss Crossley and Mrs Arcus took on the role of ‘House Prefects’ and were efficiently supported by a team of 8 ‘helper’ prefects from across Years 10 and 11. Pupils then took part in a variety of events on a rota basis.

Activities included a magnificent magic science show, a teasingly tantalising Treasure Hunt with ‘rhyming couplet clues, crazy craft activities where pupils made a Potter-themed bookmark and ‘Dobby’ door hanger, and a highly competitive team quiz. The evening ended with a fabulous Fancy Dress competition, whilst pupils supped ‘Butterbeer Ale’ and ate ‘Choc Chip Charms’ biscuits.

A number of staff also contributed to our dynamic display in the Library, incorporating broomsticks purchased from Diagon Alley, a ‘Monster Book of Monsters’, wands made to order, a ‘Horcrux brooch’, the ‘Elder Wand’, a ‘Nimbus 2000’, and a Harry Potter Film Studio book.

Event Organiser, Sue Grajczonek said: “In 2015 ‘Bloomsbury’ launched the ‘Harry Potter’ book night to encourage young people to read J.K Rowling’s epic stories rather than focusing on the films. This sounded just like the kind of activity we wanted in our new Library. The evening was a great success, with plenty of staff and students getting involved. We are already looking forward to next year’s event!”
