Springhill raised awareness around anti-bullying during National anti-bullying week, 16 to 20 November.
Lessons throughout the week included facts and figures regarding bullying incidents. 'Blue Thursday' offered students the chance to participate in competitions to win prizes. The JAMS taught Yr7 lessons to provide advice and guidance around incidents of bullying. The radio station broadcast daily shows during lunchtime encouraging students 'not to suffer in silence' and to 'tell someone' if they are being bullied.
The winners from the anti-bullying event are:
Name the teddy bear - Albert - Asad Hussain, 8H
Design a T-shirt - Ambreen Fatima 9G, Amy Dalton 9P and Shannon Davies 7S - These Pupils will make their design on a real T-shirt next week.
Anti-bullying slogans - Kiran Iqbal 8S – the winning slogan was STOP BULLYING IT £ TEARS
The PE department ran a rowing competition in the gym. Each child had to see how far they could row in 30 seconds. It was great to see a lot of participation, encouragement, healthy competition and support for each other which we felt contributed to the spirit of the day.
The winners that rowed the furthest in each Year group were:
Year 7 - Abu 7R 104m
Year 8 - Uzeaff 8S 139m
Year 9 - Ben Bradbury 9P 135m
Year 10 - Zoe Stewart 10S 142m
Year 11 - Stuart Neate 11G 164m
Mock GCSE Exams for Year 11s will be taking place next week. Can all pupils please arrive on time and with the correct equipment for the exams. Timetables will be available in school.
The Year 7 and 10 girls played netball against Holy Family last Wednesday at Springhill. Both teams were defeated but the Year 7 team are improving all the time. The Year 10 team got stronger as the game went on and didn't concede as many in the second half as they did in the first.
Last week 50 pupils were given the opportunity of being 'Extras' in the current filming of BBC's Waterloo Road. They had to work a full 12hrs starting at 7.00am and were involved in the filming all that time. It gave them a unique insight into the production side of television whilst working closely with some of the leading actors. The work they did will be aired next year. Springhill's art department has provided the programme's scenery department with lots of work created by our pupils, and these can be seen on the programme.
Cartwheel Arts have organised a Talent Show for the Newbold area. The show will be held in February 2010. Only pupils aged between 12-19 living in Newbold can enter. The company would like pupils who sing, rap, play in a band or dance to enter. A taster session will be held here at Springhill in the main hall for those who want to try out their talent. There will be coaching sessions in singing, mc-ing, streetdance, hip hop and a vocal coach. This taster session will happen on Monday 30 November between 3.30 - 5.30pm.

A group of 9 Year 8 pupils who are part off SHEC, Springhill's Enterprise Club, recently went and enjoyed a trip to the Manchester Museum to participate in a Enterprise Competition Event.
The school has been closed Thursday and Friday for holidays and will be open on Monday 30 November.
