Students from schools in the Heywood and Middleton area are celebrating their hard work today (Thursday 22 August) as they receive their GCSEs.

After an average drop in grades across England, teachers were just as thrilled by the results.

At Holy Family RC and CE college in Heywood, over half of the year 11 students achieved A and A* grades with 52% achieving at least one of the top grades.
87% of students achieved at least five higher grade passes and 98% of students achieved five or more GCSE grades.

Hiraa Jamil achieved some of the top grades in the school with eight A* and three A and is ready to take the next step to Holy Cross College. She is hoping to study Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and Religious Studies. She said: “I couldn’t get to sleep last night, I was like ‘what if I’ve done really bad’.
“I didn’t want to let anyone down. I just can’t believe it.”

Matthew Clark achieved two B and five C and is preparing to start at Hopwood Hall College to study Games Coding. He said: “It’s a lot better than I thought I was going to get and I have enough for my college place so I’m really really happy.”

Staff at Siddal Moor Sports College, Heywood say that the results this year have been the best ever achieved. 54% of students received five A* to C grades, including English and Maths. This is an improvement of seven percent on last year.

Steve Britton, the school’s headteacher, said: “The students have done incredibly well and this is testament to the hard work of both students and staff.”

Results at St. Anne’s Academy in Middleton saw 94% of students receiving five A* to C grades with nearly half of students receiving A* to C grades, including Maths and English.

Principal Caroline Preece said: “The results are excellent.

“There has been an improvement in the higher grades with academic GCSEs and our vocational qualifications continue to be of a high standard.”

Georgina Gloster and Catherine Nicholson are happy with their results and are looking forward to carrying on their studies at the school’s sixth form college.

Georgina Gloster achieved A in Chemistry, Biology and Physics and said: “I’m staying at the sixth form here to do Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Maths. I love it here. They’re all really nice and supportive.”

After achieving A grades in History, English Language and Literature, Christia Huntington is set to join Holy Cross College in Bury to study Psychology, Biology and English Language.
