Pupils from St. Cuthbert’s awarded places at Chemistry Camp

Date published: 09 April 2014

Three pupils from St. Cuthbert’s RC High School have been awarded a place on the prestigious Salters’ Chemistry camps.

Joel Thetford, Clarence Dumanjug and Joseph Simms, all Year 10, will spend three days at a host University.

They will stay in the University Halls of Residence and use the laboratories to carry out new, exciting experiments, and have the chance to delve into areas of chemistry that are perhaps not covered at school.

Further background information is presented through entertaining lectures and often noisy demonstrations.

In the evenings, practical work in the labs is put on the back burner, as students enjoy a variety of social activities.

Clarence and Joseph were fortunate to have been placed at Cambridge University as every year Cambridge proves to be the most popular choice. Joel will attend Nottingham University. The camps take place in the first week of July and the pupils will follow in a long tradition of St. Cuthbert’s pupils who have attended the camps.

Assistant Headteacher Mark Bagaglia said: “These camps offer the pupils a fantastic opportunity to challenge themselves in a very difficult academic subject. It allows them an insight into University life and raises aspirations of what they can achieve. The boys should be very proud of what they have accomplished and I wish them all a memorable experience.”

Each school in the country is allowed to nominate a maximum of four pupils who can apply. The pupils then completed an application form explaining the reasons why they wanted to attend the Chemistry camps and competed against other pupils nationally for the limited places.
