Wardle Academy’s Whit Friday

Date published: 24 June 2014

Wardle Junior and Intermediate Bands participated in the traditional Whit Walks in Mossley on Whit Friday. They joined with local residents to march in the Procession of Witness from ‘Top’ Mossley and back through the streets to the market place for an inter-denominational service of witness.

Later on in the day, Wardle Academy Youth Band went out in Tameside and Saddleworth. In an enjoyable evening they managed to play seven contests and collected several prizes along the way. They marched to Slaidburn and played Carr’s Glemdene on the stand.

They visited three Tameside venues and retained their top ranking at all three: at Denton Cricket Club they achieved a ‘triple’: Highest placed Junior, Deportment and Junior Cornet. This is the third consecutive year in which Laura Conway has achieved, and thoroughly deserved, the Denton Junior Cornet prize. At Broadoak and at Upper Mossley Wardle were again highest placed Junior Band, the crowds welcomed them warmly at both venues.

They then went to Friezland, Saddleworth, where the Basses won best section and the band got the Deportment Prize, at Lees and Springhead Wardle achieved a 2nd prize and at Scouthead and Austerlands they won a third and the Deportment prize.

The band finished the evening at Denshaw where they were the highest placed Youth Band and also provided supper for the swarms of midges! Janet Emsley, Director of Performing Arts, said: "We had an enjoyable and successful evening, the band played well and thoroughly deserve the praise and prizes that they achieved throughout the evening."
