World War One week

Date published: 30 June 2014

Oulder Hill Community School has been commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War by holding our World War One week in the week leading up to the centenary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on the 28 June.

All faculties and departments have been looking at various aspects of World War One and the students have enjoyed this opportunity to study the war from a variety of different angles:

• Engineering students have designed a permanent memorial for within school,
• Science students have studied the effects of chlorine gas and hydrogen filled Zeppelins as well as looking at the problems faced by the first British tanks
• Food technology have made cookies using rationed materials,
• Maths have looked at casualty lists,
• MFL have looked at the war from international points of view,
• ICT have designed interactive quizzes,
• Drama students have put on a WW1 based play,
• Geography students looked at how the map of Europe changed
• RS students have created their own prayers
• History students have been reflecting on how we should remember the war and the sacrifice of the soldiers by designing war memorials
• some students have paid their respects at the memorial within Rochdale Cemetery by reading out their prayers, poems and reflections.

A group of Year 9 Science students will be visiting Jodrell Bank on Wednesday 9 July for an educational reward trip. The coach will leave school at 8:30am prompt, and is due to return for 4:00pm (depending on traffic). We hope they have an interesting, informative day.

Pupils in Year 9 studying Geography for GCSE attended a trip on Thursday 26 June studying river features and processes as part of an investigation of a local river. The pupils took the steam train from Bury to Ramsbottom and walked along the River Irwell and studied the different parts of the river and the processes that take place. They also studied land use of the area around and how the height of the land changed in different sections. The pupils walked an overall distance of 5 miles and were pleased to be picked up at Rawtenstall where they were brought back to school at the end of the day.

The Oulder Hill Summer Music Concert will take place on Thursday 17 July from 7:00pm. Acts include: Ukulele Band, Choir, Year 8 and Year 11 Rock Bands, Year 7 Glee Club, Flute Group, Brass Band, Orchestra and many more, along with lots of great soloists! Tickets are available from Reception, priced at £3.00 for Adults and £2.00 for Concessions. We hope to see you there to celebrate our students’ achievements.
