U16 Boys Football Competition at Wright Robinson Sports College

Date published: 21 July 2014

The Redwood boys were the backbone of this years The Borough of Rochdale Team (Town Team) that played in the Summer Games.

Garry Smith, Healthy Lifestyle Co-ordinator said: "The lads played in great style, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal.

"First up the Town Team drew 0-0 with Oldham.

"This was followed by the Town Team’s only loss to the eventual winners; Manchester.

"They then had a very good 2-0 win against Wigan.

"This was followed by 2 excellent draws against the runners up and third place teams respectively.

"The Town Team drew 1-1 with both Bury and Tameside.

"All the boys played very well and all deserve a little review!

"After a slow start Lewis played the best football he has ever played. He showed great enthusiasm and made lots of outstanding tackles.

"Ubaid played great in goal, then came outfield and played well there too.

"Isaac made a few good contributions out field then went in goal and made some fantastic blocks.

"Haider set off slowly, but once he gained his confidence made some timely and skilful contributions.

"Sheraz had a mixed tournament, but as always lots of skilful touches, he probably scored one of the best goals of the tournament. He won the ball on the half way line and somehow managed to squeeze past three defenders and then tucked the ball neatly into the bottom corner of the net.

"Mohammed made an exceptional effort, ‘Mo’ was really tired due to fasting. However he worked hard and showed great character in his performance. He never moaned and was sensibly rested in all but one game.

"Daniel was a very dependable defender, who preferred to play in attack. Where possible he played front and scored 3 of our 4 goals. An excellent effort and performance.

"Jonathan made some great contributions and his tireless effort was key in a solid team performance by all the boys."

The Borough of Rochdale Team consisted of:

Redwood School - Lewis I, Ubaid, Isaac K and Haider, Sheraz H and Mohammed H
Brownhill School - Daniel
Wardle Academy - Jonathan

Garry continued: "It will be great to see all the boys continue their development as young footballers with Bridgeability session next year!"
