Congratulations to Natalie Jones, Aqsa Hussain, Muhammed Ali Khan and Abigail Raby who entered a competition organised by Friends of Denehurst Park to design a logo and draw an improvement plan for the park. The above named students won prizes for their logo designs, with Natalie Jones chosen as the overall winner. The students have been invited to receive a gift from the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale at Spotland Library on Thursday 16 October at 5:30pm. Well done!

The Year 9 Rugby team participated in their first Emerging Schools Competition at Eccles Rugby Club. They were placed in a tough group with Crompton House, Bury Church, Up Holland and Cheadle Hulme. Oulder Hill started well with a 4-1 victory over Bury Church with tries from Dayne Stewart (2), Hayden Lewis and Matthew Greenwood. This victory was followed by a win against Crompton House.

Oulder Hill had to sustain a lot of pressure from Crompton House, but stood firm as a team before hitting them on the break with two quick tries from Matthew Greenwood to win the game 2-1. The boys then faced Up Holland and Cheadle Hulme, two schools who are very well established Rugby Union teams.

Oulder Hill narrowly lost both games with a single try in each game. Oulder Hill finally faced Broad Oak in a third place playoff and beat them convincingly 5-1 with tries from Hakeem Gbajabiamila (2), Jack Turner, Matthew Greenwood and Dayne Stewart.

The success that we have had in this tournament is impressive considering this is the first time that the pupils have played 12-a-side Rugby, building on the development of the Rugby 7’s last year. Well done to all the students who participated: Jack Turner (1 try), Eddy Riley, Dayne Stewart (3 tries), Hayden Lewis (1 try), Matthew Greenwood (5 tries), Callum Ruffell (1 try), Daniel Madeley, Hakeem Gbajabiamila (2 tries), Nelson McKeown, Jordan Parkhill, Marcus Welsby, Emmerson Bradshaw and Max Weaver-Bamford.

This week’s Year 9 Celebration Spotlight on Achievement awards go to: Damien Green, Mnahil Mustafa, Zayn Janghir, Mohammed Kateb and Mitchell Thompson for their perceptive analysis of Lord of the Flies; to Laraib Raja for her excellent start to Year 9 German; to Haleema Rashid for her sustained effort and attitude to learning; to Harry Edwards for an impressive start to Dance and to the Year 9 Rugby Team (Dayne Stewart, Hayden Lewis, Matthew Greenwood, Hakeem Gbajabiamila, Jack Turner, Eddy Riley, Callum Ruffell, Daniel Madeley, Nelson McKeown, Jordan Parkhill, Marcus Welsby, Emmerson Bradshaw and Max Weaver-Bamford) for their amazing achievements in the Emerging Schools Competition.Special mention must go to Tahrima Begum who, this week, receives the Oulder Hill Year 9 Homework Oscar for her exceptional art work based on an I-Pad Image.

Well done to both our Year 7 and Year 8 netball teams on their results against Falinge last week. The Year 7 team won 7-5 and was made up of: Sarah England (player of match), Isobel Pauline, Lily Mangan, Heather Tetlow, Jess Verity, Jacey Noon, Liberty Davis, Rachael Goulding and Holly Birch. The Year 8 team won 16-0, well done to the girls who took part: Alana Percy (player of match), Katie Hicks, Olivia Hartley, Natasha Downton, Elise Harrison, Emma Whitworth, Natalia Dec, Abbie Holt, Abigail Raby, Holly Fitton and Melissa Hardman.

Well done to the Year 7 football team who played their second game for Oulder Hill against Hollingworth High School. They were again very unfortunate to finish on the losing end of a 2-0 score line. The team had many clear cut chances and were unlucky not to convert at least two of these, with Lucas Dowd and Connor Marrow coming closest to scoring.

The Hollingworth goal keeper was voted man of the match as he was pivotal in keeping Oulder Hill out and preserving a clean sheet for his team.Hopefully our first win will come next week against Wardle High and the boys will have something to celebrate. There were some outstanding individual performances again from Maxx Wright and also Connor Marrow who worked tirelessly on the wing providing many opportunities for his strikers to score. Well done to the squad members for all their hard work and effort:Joseph Oldham, Maxx Wright, James Warburton, Dion Parker-Minchin, Thomas Coleman, Ethan Steele, Dylan Stott, Connor Marrow, William Strudwick, Lucas Dowd, Christian Carney and Cameron McGhee.

The Year 8 boys’ football team were unfortunate to lose against a strong Middleton Technology College side. Newcomer Connor Roscoe had a great debut, working hard in defence with Tom Johnson and Joe Golden. The midfield made some strong tackles and played some quick triangles to cut through the opposition and Harry Toogood put in a captain’s performance, covering several miles up and down the left wing and dropping into defence when necessary. The man-of-the-match was a difficult choice. It could have gone to Thomas, Steven, Harry or Ethan, but it goes to Connor Roscoe for a great debut run. The squad was made up of: Harry Toogood (Captain), Adaam Latif, Sulayman Qadir, Andrew Hill, Ethan Haworth, Thomas Johnson, Steven Johnson, Ibrahim Usman, Oliver Godwin, Danny Collins, Joe Golden, Connor Roscoe and Patrick Hadfield.
