Matthew Moss High School recognised as a Changemaker School

Date published: 07 November 2014

Matthew Moss High School has been selected an Ashoka Changemaker School, joining a growing network of more than 130 innovative and influential schools across the world.

Matthew Moss High School is led by a team of Changemakers who see the world not as it is, but as it could be, and who work to make that world a reality. They demonstrate a commitment to ensuring students not only excel academically, but are also equipped with the skills to address the needs of their community through empathy, teamwork, leadership and changemaking.

Bill Drayton, founder and CEO of Ashoka, explains: “Once a young person has had a dream, built a team, and changed their world, they have the power to express love and respect in action. They will be a changemaker for life—a real contributor in a world where value no longer comes from efficiency in repetition, as it has for millennia.”

Matthew Moss High School is all about learning! They empower young people for a life of learning both satisfying to themselves and of significant value to others. They strive to enable each learner to reach their full potential through the use of a unique learning agenda, innovative project-based curricular, including subjects such as My World, and Adult to Adult discourse. The leadership at Matthew Moss exhibits their commitment beyond just academics, recognizing that changemaker skills are essential for students to be prepared for our rapidly changing world.

Mark Moorhouse, Headteacher at Matthew Moss High School, says: “We are very honoured to receive recognition from such a prestigious organisation as Ashoka., who have been operating on a global scale for over 40 years. This partnership will drive the development of our work in preparing young people for a life in which they make sustained and positive contributions to society.”

Ashoka’s Changemaker Schools Network provides Matthew Moss High School with opportunities to: influence the greater education discourse through media and presenting at conferences; access like-minded schools across the world; collaborate on projects that impact education; and access partners in the Ashoka network like universities, social entrepreneurs, and companies. Ashoka launched the Changemaker Schools Network in 2012 to identify, recognize, and collaborate with innovative, influential schools that are rethinking education. The network is aninternational community of more than 130 leading schools that serve as models for cultivating students as changemakers, leading the way to ensuring every child and young person develops agency, empathy, and voice.

The network includes schools of all demographics and geographies, serving as proof points that excellence can be achieved in any environment. Changemaker Schools also contribute to shifting the demand among parents and teachers from schools focused only on academic outcomes to schools that graduate students as empathic, collaborative leaders.

Rob Wilson, Director of Ashoka in the UK expressed: “We are so excited to welcome Matthew Moss High School to the network! The culture of the school, the systems they have in place, and the curriculum they teach their students set them up to shape an entire community of changemakers.”
