Newlands School rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted

Date published: 30 January 2015

Newlands School in Middleton has received a ‘good’ rating after its latest Ofsted inspection.

Following the inspection in November last year, inspectors acknowledged the ‘robust pursuit of improvements in teaching and in meeting pupils needs by leaders, governors and managers.’

Newlands School Headteacher Deborah Rogers said: “We felt that the inspection went very well. ‘Good’ is a very broad band and we are confident that our school sits highly within this. We are continuing in our work to make provisions even better and responding carefully to the needs of the individual children in our ever-growing and ever changing school.”

Pupils’ behaviour was described as ‘outstanding’ with the report stating: “Staff manage behaviour with consummate expertise. They know every pupil and what difficulties, if any, prevent them from behaving well. Planned approaches to manage behaviour are very effective.”

Teaching staff were also praised, including Headteacher Deborah Rogers who is said to have led the school to “improvement effectively”. The report adds: “She brings rigour to school management and inspires other school leaders and staff with her ambition and clear sense of direction.”

Teachers, teaching staff, leaders and governors were described as “extremely diligent”, and the high expectations set by teachers and teaching assistants were also praised.

Ms Rogers added: “The pupils are always enthusiastic about their learning and staff continually strive to provide good and outstanding teaching. We feel that this was reflected in the very positive report we received.

“In addition to observing specific lessons inspectors also spent time with the children at lunchtime and visited a series of Curriculum Enrichment sessions too.

“I am confident that the inspectors saw our school as it is every day and the experience was positive for children and staff.”

Newlands School is a school for pupils with moderate, severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties, which for many pupils adversely affects their physical abilities, speech, language and communication.
