Year 7, My World - Matthew Moss High School

In year 7 we have been working on a project all about the 10,000 hours theory as discussed by Daniel Coyle in “The Talent Code”.

We chose a topic or area that we would like to develop and spent approximately 6 weeks focusing on this. Topics selected ranged from perfecting how to draw trees to mastering the tick tock within gymnastics.

Initially we focused on developing our topic or skill. We then asked teachers and friends for critique. Based on this critique we developed our topic in order to make as much progress as possible. This process was repeated until we had started making steps towards becoming an expert in our skill.

At the end of our project we joined up with another class and presented our individual projects to each other. We shared what we had learnt and what could we do better if we had another chance to do this.

At the end of the project, learning was displayed by every student via a mind map. A mind map has curved branches like in our brain. If you used straight lines in a mind map it would not draw peoples’ attention to it. The purpose of drawing a mind map was to show the links of why we have chosen a topic, why we have redrafted and the learning journey we have been on.

Within my mind map, one strand illustrated the final draft, while another strand focused on shape.

Now we are working on another project and I think everyone will produce something better because we have learnt how to manage our time, work co-operatively and effectively.
