Youth Sports Trust Award
At the national Youth Sports Trust conference Redwood was presented with the `SEND and Inclusion Award'. This is a fantastic achievement and recognition of the high quality practice within school by all staff. Great news indeed and follows on from an equally high quality report from the LA Healthy Schools Moderation Team which highlighted the effective whole school practice to promoting pupils health and well – being.

Valentine`s Family Disco - RedAid
Our family Valentine Disco will take place on Tuesday 10 February 5.30pm to 7.30pm, at a cost of £2 a ticket. Those students who normally attend the youth club on this night will be able to attend the disco. Why not come along and have a great family evening.

World Book Day – 5 March
Please make a note of World Book Day when we will be planning whole school activities for students. This will include giving students and staff the opportunity to wear costumes from a book of their choice. Our activities will take place for the entire week 2 – 6 March.

Red Nose Day – 13 March
We are aiming to combine cross department activities for Red Nose Day and Winter Olympics activities on Friday 13th March. Details will be circulated after half term

Life in World War 1- History comes to Redwood: Friday 6 February
A very special curriculum project will take place in Key Stage 3 when students will sample life in the first World War, 1914 to 1918. This will involve actors in soldiers uniforms and civilian costumes talking about their experiences and giving a feel for the experiences in The Great War. What an experience.

Year 14 Students 'My Plans'
It has been necessary to bring forward the transition My Plan meetings for our Y14 students to March from May. Letters have been sent to parents and carers with updated details of the new appointment times. This is at the request of the local authority to ensure that sufficient time is in place for the completion of the action plans for students moving on to college.

Redwood Short Breaks
A reminder that the youth clubs take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6pm – 8pm, and Saturday morning 10am – 12. Students are welcome to attend and should parents require more details please contact school. The half term holiday club programme takes place 16 – 19 February and all places have now been allocated.

KS5

The latest success in the Independent Travel Programme is Jobie. Jobie is now travelling from school back home and will be continuing with his training to travel to school in the morning. Very well done.

The Pottery group have been working with clay to make a model of their choice– we had a menagerie of pigs, tigers, birds and faces.

The music group have been singing and playing along to a classic Beatles song.

The horticulture group re-potted 56 geranium plants in 50 minutes. We are most impressed with their work rate. Komel thought it was cold. Jordan said he would like to work in a garden centre.

Student of the Week
Jobie Blackwell for adapting well to circumstances and becoming more independent.

Most Improved Student
Mitchell for improving his manners and showing us a more mature side.

KS4

SEB have been making their own love heart cushions in Miss Greenhalgh’s textile class. Students helped to cut out the hearts, sew them qnd then stuff them. They also made some heart paper chains for the Valentine's Disco.

In Personal Progress we are looking at what makes a healthy lifestyle. We know eating a balanced diet and exercise are very important, but we have also learnt that we must de stress in life to keep us healthy. This week we have been de stressing with foot spas and calming chill out music. All students enjoyed the experience.

KS3

Last week students selected for the Head Teacher achievers award were: Hassan, Thomas, Luke J & Alicia & Beren.

Year 7 Yellow went swimming over at Oulder Hill pool for the first time. They were all wonderfully well behaved and coped with the change really well. They all enjoyed the chance to swim in the big pool and did extremely well in helping themselves to get dressed. Swimming will now be a regular activity on their P.E. curriculum.

Year 7 Yellow has also been learning about Healthy Eating.

Year 8/9 Blue has been learning lots about Shakespearean insults during their Romeo & Juliet lessons. They have enjoyed trying out their new language skills and vocabulary during group work.

Jack S, Katelan, Hamza & Jordan H went on a trip to ASDA in Pilsworth, Jack was fabulous at the self-service tills; he scanned, paid and packed all the shopping independently. After shopping they all went into the café for refreshments.

Key Stage 3 held a special day with the focus being on History and World War One. Lots of activities went on throughout the day such as workshops provided by Touchstones, trips out on the mini bus to places like the Imperial War Museum, an old fashioned sweet shop with goodies to sample, learning & signing World War 1 songs, exploring old artefacts with themes of ‘Washday’ ‘Homes’ and ‘Toys’ and tutor group based activities like baking and arts/crafts.

Pupils in the Lilac group went shopping to buy their “ration” ingredients for a Trench cake, War cake (no eggs, no fat because this was limited in the war) and Anzak biscuits. They are ready for the WW1 experience.

Mr Hall’s assembly focus was about WW1. Sue taught KS3 songs from the War in Sign-a-Long and with the help of Mr Hall they acted out one of the songs.

8/9 Green have worked really hard on their topic on Electricity. They are aware of the dangers of Electricity but now know how useful it is in our lives.

Student Comment: Sana in Year 8 is always talking about ‘FROZEN’, she said “Clare, I’m not a princess…..I’m a Queen...”

A BIG thank you to P&B newsagents on Greave for supporting & allowing our pupils to weigh out “War Time Rations” amounts of sweets. These sweets will be used in our KS3 “History/War day sweet shop”.
