Kentmere Academy

Date published: 16 February 2015

Another half term has swiftly gone by. It has been a very busy and successful one with the highlight perhaps being our new name Kentmere Academy. We are now part of the Wardle Trust. I am sure you will have noticed our new sign at the entrance. Next half term will be equally busy with a number of exciting days planned for the children. The newsletter will enlighten you about these areas.

Miss Day’s Year 5 class: On Monday Year 5 enjoyed learning about each other’s languages and cultures on Bi-lingual day, we listened to a story in Urdu, shared experiences and then wrote labels for classroom objects. We all agreed that being unable to understand what someone else is saying is very confusing and thought of ways to welcome those who don't speak English to Kentmere.

Mrs Platt’s Year 2 class: Key Stage 1 found a little lost hedgehog in our school Secret Garden. We sent him to the Hedgehog Hospital to be looked after. We then had a lovely 'Hedgehog morning' were we made biscuits, painted pictures; made clay hedgehogs; wrote our own stories and made hedgehog right angle checkers, which we tested in our Secret Garden.

Sports News: The football team went to Rochdale Soccer Factory for the North West Regional tournament. They played with passion and team work. The other teams where defensive and had good structure but Kentmere came out winners of 3 out of 5 games. Unfortunately, we didn't win the group so we did not go through to the finals. A big well done to all the boys who came to the event.

After half term Miss Ogden will be setting up a sports council. The sports council are elected from Years 4 to 6. There are two representatives from each class. These councillors will work with Miss Ogden to improve the quality and selection of sports that the school teach or participate in. They will provide opinions from their classmates and feedback information to help inform decisions and create a sporting ethos.

The nursery group have been learning about empty and full using different jugs and containers to measure. We have also been looking at the role of fire fighters, the police and post men and women and how they help to keep us safe. We even got a visit from fire fighters!

It’s Red Nose Day on Friday 13 March and red noses will be available to buy from school after half term for £1.00.

It’s Chinese New Year on 27 February and to celebrate children will be asked to dress in red and yellow. Chinese food will also be served for lunch.

After the February half term school will no longer be providing the school dinner money envelopes. However you can buy a 30 pack of small brown envelopes from B&M Bargains for 99p.

Mrs J Neale is leaving us to start her maternity leave today; we wish her and her new baby the best of luck and therefore welcome Miss N Cutler who will cover Miss Neale’s post and will be joining us after the half term.

Mrs W Long will also be joining the school after the break as the new Catering Supervisor… as will Mrs S Hussain who will be returning to Kentmere after being on maternity leave.

Mrs S Parveen the lunch time organiser, will sadly be leaving us. We would like to thank her for her all her hard work whilst working at Kentmere.

If you have some time this half term perhaps take a look at our website www.kentmereacademy.co.uk. Have a safe and relaxing half term. See you on Monday 23 February.
